Grandmother Mortified with Her Role in the Election of Harry Reid to U.S. Congress…

When my buddies and I go drinking and one of us starts to bloviate and begins making up details and/or stories, one of us will call out “I call Bullsh*t” (which of course means that we aren’t buying any of the crap being told). The person telling the tall tale immediately realizes they have been caught and (after some ribbing from the rest of the guys) stops the spin. After watching the latest presidential address about the oil crisis, I call bullsh*t!
The President was telling the public that he wakes up in the morning thinking about the oil spill and goes to bed at night night thinking about it. I have no doubt that he does think about it often (especially because of his sliding poll numbers). Everyone is worried about it and he should be no different except for the fact that our popularity does not correlate to the amount of the oil washing up on shore. I do not begrudge the President for what has happened anymore than I blame Bush for what happened in Katrina. I was sympathetic to the pressure and stress this disaster must be causing him, but then it happened. He instantaneously blew whatever sympathy I may have had for him in a single sentence. I was sympathizing with him on his obvious troubled condition but then he tells this story about his 12-year old daughter. Allegedly, that very morning while shaving, he was visited in the bathroom by his 12yo. With great concern, the 12yo asks “did you plug the hole yet daddy?” Not more than 30 seconds after the words left the President’s lips, I loudly exclaimed ”I call bullsh*t!” Did his 12yo also ask about the military buildup on the border of Korea? Did she go on to ask about the status of the Euro? Was there any, “did you stop Iran from building nukes Daddy?”
From the moment I get up, to the moment I go to bed I have news pumping from my television or radio. I live and teach economics and/or politics. In my off time, I like to relax by…..listening to more news. My wife, my friends and my relatives all talk ”politics”. It would be impossible to be in my home for more than a few minutes without someone bringing up politics. With that said, my 14yo honor roll student could give a crap less about any of it. As I shave in the morning, I can’t imagine my 14yo knocking on the door to ask me if they plugged the leak off the coast. I have no idea what she and her friends talk about. When I ask her about what indeed they do talk about, she says “nothing”. Trying to clarify, I ask again, “you talk about nothing?” Her usual response, along with an eye roll, is ”nope!”
Maybe if we were on the gulf and she could see the oil washing up on the shore, maybe she would be interested. For kids living in the Midwest, they probably are not talking about it (is there oil washing up on the capital steps)? I saw a short clip of an interview with Michelle Obama and she expressed to the interviewer that at their (she and Obama) dinner table they don’t really talk about politics. She stated that he likes to keep his presidential duties separate from his personal life. I guess he took time out of normally precious family time to talk to his kids about British Petroleum’s top kill plugging procedure.
This entire 12yo-daughter-story was something created by a group of 40-year old men sitting around a large table thinking about script ideas that might get the most emotional punch. Before he began his speech, there should have been opening credits scene with various wacky shots of the Obama family accompanied by a musical score. Immediately after the credits, the voice-over announcer would deliver the following: ”on this very special episode, Barack answers to his hardest critic…his 12yo”.
We know the seriousness of the problem Mr. President, save us the theatrics.

GM “repaying” taxpayers with taxpayer money? What? Is this how Timothy F. Geithner, the United States Treasury, the Obama administration and General Motors want to gain back trust from American citizens? <=Click here for the story by Gretchen Morgenson.

Regardless of what everyone presumes, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s day of Independence. In fact, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the U.S. more so than in Mexico. In Mexico, it is more likely that Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated with any fan fare at all, depending on which providence you are in.
Furthermore, the United States and Abraham Lincoln actually helped Mexico gain their independence from the French which is celebrated on September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo has actually become more of an American celebration much like St. Patricks Day, Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day. Another day of celebration that American capitalists have conjured up to lure Americans into spending their money to make up for the economically slow period that normally comes during these times of the year. Get over it.
